This song was written from the "song assignment" at Southwest Regional Folk Alliance Conference in Austin. When you check-in for the conference you reach into a fish bowl and pull out a phrase or topic and you are supposed to write a song over the weekend which is performed in front of everyone during the Sunday brunch. Frankly I don't remember now what the little topic said but it was something about a "next life." My mom had just passed away a few weeks prior and this song came bubbling up about an hour before we were to perform our song in front of a ballroom full of fellow musicians. I wrote it in the shower and my hair was still wet when I sang it. It's a simple reminder to not wait -- cherish those who are important to you, and let them know it.
lyrics
In the next life gonna do things right
Gonna make things better less trouble and strife
I'll be just right with another chance
Gonna stay skinny and learn to dance
In the next life I'm gonna call my mama
Twice a week, maybe tomorrow
In the next life I'm gonna get it right next time
Chorus:
And all I gotta do to know what to do in the next life
Is look at everything that I'm doing now
'n' not do it again
Tag:
In the next life I'm gonna love my baby
A little bit longer and a lot more lately
In the next life I'm gonna get it right next time
Repeat Chorus
Tag 2:
In the next life I'm gonna call my mama
Twice a week, maybe tomorrow
In the next life I'm gonna get it right next time
